  • The protest made by a few members of the Indian Lok Sabha against the visiting Sri Lankan Parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker was motivated by petty political gain said Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody in a statement issued yesterday.

A few Parliamentarians representing Tamil Nadu voters had indulged in this act at a time when the Indian government and Lok Sabha were working in close co-operation with Sri Lanka in order to provide temporary pleasure to their voters.

This is not something new when we find even several local parliamentarians are seen holding placards and protesting in our own Parliament during sessions, said the Deputy Speaker in his statement.

The Sri Lanka government has ended the war and launched accelerated development in the North and East to cater to the war affected Tamil people and the Indian Government too was supporting that effort to the hilt and violated and insignificant events such as this would never jeopardise the friendship and goodwill between the government of India and Sri Lanka, the statement added.
