  • ‘Except engaging in criticism and baseless allegations the Opposition parties have so far failed to face an election under a clear policy and programme of work, said UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayantha in a press release issued yesterday.

The minister said the UPFA, has not only won 45 out of 65 Local Councils which went to polls on Saturday, but, also succeeded in increasing the number of its elected members and the percentage of votes gained. He said the UPFA categorically denied the Opposition allegations about the use of coercion and indirectly influencing the election. Even the polls observers had described Saturday’s election as a free and fair polls.

The minister who observed that the UPFA had increased its voter strength in the North and East as well said it will be able to further increase its strength in these areas when future development activities are implemented with people’s participation.

The minister who requested the opposition to join hands with the government to face challenges posed by the international community said the Opposition would face more debacles at the hands of the masses if it failed to do so. The minister who thanked all organizers, alliance parties, candidates and voters for ensuring the UPFA victory, said the UPFA was thankful to the Elections Commissioner and has staff as well as the Security Forces and Police for conducting a fair and free poll and releasing election results on time.

The minister who extended his felicitation to all members elected at the local polls requested their unstinted support for the country’s development effort.
